Are Meal Delivery Services Worth It?

Welcome to my blog. I am so glad you’re here.  Today we are going to discuss meal delivery services and if they are worth it, or healthy, or a waste of money. We will also inform you of the ones that could be beneficial and /or the healthiest.

So many of us have tried or at least have seen the ads either on TV or social media about these “healthy” meals being delivered to your door and all you have to do is follow the directions and you end up with this amazing, wonderful, healthy dinner for you or your family. But are they healthy? are they delicious? and are they worth it? So, let’s find out and look at the top ones that have been evaluated and see if they really stack up.

Delivery Services

Staying healthy and eating healthy kind of go hand in hand. Usually eating healthy means cooking healthy meals at home and less delivery or takeout. However, if you’re constantly on the go, it can be a challenge to make time to plan meals, let alone buy ingredients and organize lunch or dinner. Lucky for us we have options, right? prepared meal subscriptions and “healthy” meal kit services, right? These companies aim to help you eat better without having to do all that shopping and buying, and planning.  So, what are some of the available services that offer this? Here is just a few that you may have heard of, Green Chef, Blue Apron, Purple Carrot, Hungryroot, Fresh N Lean, just to name a few. There are some other ones like Splendid Spoon, Pete’s Real Food, Mosaic Foods, and Home Chef that you might have tried or have heard of.

Differences Between Services

So, after doing some research on the different services, they are not all created equal. It all depends on what you are looking for and what you are expecting from your service. For example, Blue Apron teamed up with Weight Watchers for easy cooking that aligns with their point system. Purple Carrot is a plant-based meal service, Hungryroot is part meal service-part grocery service, Pete’s Real Food used to be Pete’s Paleo, and Mosaic Foods is a meatless meal service. This is just a small sample of the differences. You will have to decide what meal service you are looking for and just do the research for that particular one.

Price

So, the prices were very similar and pretty much the same within a few dollars. For example, Green Chef starts at $12 /serving and has about 30 recipes a week. Blue Apron starts at $8/serving and contains about 16 recipes per week. Purple Carrot is about $11/serving and contains about 8 recipes per week. Hungryroot is $8/serving with over 100 meals options per week. Fresh N Lean is about $10/serving, and they have about 18 meal options per week. So, you can see that they are pretty close in price.

Worth it?

In my opinion it boils down to convenience. But if you have to feed a family of 4-6 people, it might not be worth it. For example, if one cost you $11 per serving and you have 4 people to serve that’s $44 for one meal. Multiply that by 7 days a week and that is $308 for 1 meal per day per person for 7 days. I think you would make out better at the grocery store. If you don’t have kids or a big family, I think it might be worth it. You would save on gas, time at the store, and waste. One good thing and a benefit of these meal services is that it takes the guess work out of what to cook, and how to cook it and portion sizes, and all that.

I hope this helps and you can make an honest decision on a few of these meal services. I personally do not use them because I have 2 growing kids and it would be too expensive. My wife and I did the math, and it would not work for us, however, it might for you. Please let me know if you currently use one of these services or if you are thinking about it. I would be curious to know what you think of it and which one you use.

Take care,

Darren
