Is it Intuitive Eating or Mindful Eating?

Intuitive eating is actually a very simple idea. It basically means that you make peace with all types of food. You see, unlike traditional diets that restrict or “ban” certain foods, intuitive eating requires you to stop looking at food as “good” or “bad.” Instead, listen to your own body and eat what feels right for YOU. You might think this means you can and should just eat whatever you want, anytime you want. No! That’s not the case. Experts say intuitive eating means that you tap into your body’s natural ability to tell you when you’re hungry or satisfied.

Best Snacks for Night Shift

Working the night shift may drastically alter your life in one way or another. The human body is meant to function during the day and relax or sleep at night. Frequent changes in shift work have a huge influence on one’s internal body clock. Particularly night shifts disrupt the body’s biorhythm. Working against your natural body biorhythms presents challenges that adds extra stress when you work night shifts. Eating a nutritious diet can help productivity and maintain focus at work throughout the night or early morning.

Meal Timing and Shift Work

According to this study in sciencedirect.com, night shift workers had a 25% higher risk of being overweight and a 17% higher risk of obesity, and the study concluded this was in part by wake-sleep cycle disturbance. Night shift workers tend to have snacks and meals as a strategy to stay awake.

Researchers have identified similar genes in people, fruit flies, mice, plants, fungi, and several other organisms that make up the “clocks” molecular components. However, research has shown that the biological clock is not equally sensitive to light at all times of the day as has been shown subsequently for many organisms that use light as an entraining signal.

Healthy Eating Habits for Shift Workers

Ensure most of your meals contain a few carbs (very few) and a lot of protein. Shoot for some vegetables and a little bit of fruit as well to help with variety and taste. You might even be able to have the fruit with yogurt as a snack while working, if you are able to. One word of caution with meals while doing shift work is avoiding very heavy meals. Don’t consume large meals and then try to go back to work.
