Is the Food Pyramid (Plate) Still Relevant?

America’s Food Pyramid was controversial from the start. After developing the Pyramid for several years, the brochure was sent out in early 1991. But then representatives for the National Cattlemen’s Association reportedly saw media coverage that put beef in the same category as fats and dairy.

Breaking the Soda Pop Habit

Americans frequently enjoy soda because it’s readily available. Almost all food establishments now carry soda. Soda pop has become a staple of the American diet, making it harder and harder to avoid and give up. But today, I am going to tell you how you can break this habit. Should You Go Grain Free

Grains are basically the edible seeds of certain grasses (in a nutshell). Without the nuts! So, anyway some examples of such grains are wheat, rice, oats, corn, barley, millet, rye, spelt just to name a few or most of them. There are some grains referred to as “pseudo-grains” such as quinoa, buckwheat, and amaranth. These are technically seeds so I know the people that follow a grain free diet generally stay away from these as well.

Is it Intuitive Eating or Mindful Eating?

Intuitive eating is actually a very simple idea. It basically means that you make peace with all types of food. You see, unlike traditional diets that restrict or “ban” certain foods, intuitive eating requires you to stop looking at food as “good” or “bad.” Instead, listen to your own body and eat what feels right for YOU. You might think this means you can and should just eat whatever you want, anytime you want. No! That’s not the case. Experts say intuitive eating means that you tap into your body’s natural ability to tell you when you’re hungry or satisfied.

Meal Timing and Shift Work

A study done on overweight nursing professionals working night shift found that night workers tend to eat at irregular times, carb intake was higher on their days off, however carbs were higher later in the hours for both days on and days off. According to this study in sciencedirect.com, night shift workers had a 25% higher risk of being overweight and a 17% higher risk of obesity, and the study concluded this was in part by wake-sleep cycle disturbance. Night shift workers tend to have snacks and meals as a strategy to stay awake.

Circadian Rhythms, Biological Clocks, Master Clocks, Oh My!

Researchers have identified similar genes in people, fruit flies, mice, plants, fungi, and several other organisms that make up the “clocks” molecular components.
