How to Find a Gym or Personal Trainer

Finding a gym or personal trainer can really help your odds of success. Here are a few things to consider when looking for just the right fit.

Consider why now is the best time; health, kids, injury, rehab, surgery? These are all good reasons and determining your reason will also help to keep you motivated.  Another thing to consider is how this new fitness plan and workout will fit into your schedule and budget. The last thing you would want to do is get all excited about starting and a couple weeks or so later have to give it up due to scheduling conflicts or not being able to afford it.  Other things to consider is identifying your goals. Do you want to lose weight? Gain weight? Just get in shape? Get more flexible or increase range of motion?

Ask your friends and family members and find out what they like and don’t like about their gym or trainer. Consider their plan and what their goals are to help you decide where you want to join or what trainer you would like to hire. If you like your coworkers gym because they have a pool, that might be an option if you want to try water aerobics.  If you like your brothers gym because they have a daycare in it and you can take the kids with you, which might be an option that works into your schedule.

When finding a personal trainer, consider calling them and asking them if they have a couple free classes to see if you both are a good fit. Ask them about their options, specials, and how they approach your goals. When choosing a trainer, make sure you ask a lot of questions. See if they have a free consultation, guest passes, and payment options. Just remember, the trainer works for you, you decide your goals, you are going to put in the effort and you are the one that is going to see results. Make sure the trainer is a good fit and is flexible with your schedule, goals, and experience level.  In addition, the trainer should have the expertise in the goals and the list of things you want to work on. For example, if your goal is to compete in a weight training competition you probably don’t want to choose someone who has worked with people training for a 5k.

Just be careful and do your research. Personal trainers and gyms are not one size fits all. There are so many of both to choose from just make sure you ask around, research, and ask questions. Please let me know if I can help in any way.
